Objectives: The present study was conducted with the aim of the difference in the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral and integrative couple therapy on improving the components of marital satisfaction and marital intimacy in incompatible couples.
Methods: The method of the current research was semi-experimental of pre-test and post-test type with two experimental groups and one control group. The statistical population of the present study included all couples with marital discord who referred to the counseling centers of Tabriz city in 2023. Among them, a sample of 45 couples with incompatible status, using the purposeful sampling method and according to the entry and exit criteria. They were randomly selected and placed in cognitive-behavioral couple therapy group (N= 15), integrative couple therapy group (N= 15) and control group (N= 15). Data collection tools included Bagarozi Marital Intimacy Questionnaire, Enrich Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire, Integrative Couple Therapy Package and Cognitive-Behavioral Couple Therapy Package. In order to check the hypotheses, univariate and multivariate variance analysis methods were used.
Results: The results showed that cognitive behavioral couple therapy and integrative couple therapy improve the components of marital satisfaction and the components of marital intimacy. Also, the results showed that integrative couple therapy is more effective in improving the intimacy and marital satisfaction components than cognitive-behavioral couple therapy, and this difference was significant at the P<0.01 level.
Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, we conclude that although both cognitive-behavioral and integrative therapy are effective in improving marital satisfaction and intimacy, integrative couple therapy has a greater effect in improving the components of these two variables. Because integrative couple therapy helps couples to show their emotions and, in this way, they can change the rules that prevent the establishment of emotional relationships.
