Objectives The present study aims to explore the lived experiences of the caregivers of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) in Iran.
Methods This is a qualitative study using Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory approach. The sampling was done purposefully until reaching theoretical saturation. During data collection, 18 unstructured interviews with caregivers and 3 semi-structured interviews with experts were conducted. The process of coding and data analysis was done simultaneously based on the theoretical model.
Results Role entanglement (core theme) and eight categories were extracted: Harmful family context, inhibiting cognitions (contextual factors), initial confronting, incongruent feedback, positive/negative attitudes toward treatment (causal factors), loneliness, adversity, dissociation/coherence (consequences).
Conclusion The caregivers’ encountering with BD is a dynamic process influenced by personal, social, economic, and cultural variables. Over time, it can make it challenging for caregivers, which is associated with positive and negative consequences.
