Objectives: The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of Kootkar's CBT with tDCS or pharmacotherapy with citalopram on the improvement of depression symptoms, inhibition and cognitive flexibility of stroke patients.
Methods: The current research was a semi-experimental type with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of this study included all stroke sufferers who referred to Dr. Hashemzehi's clinic in Zahedan city in 2022 and the sample group included 45 of these people who were selected by the available sampling method and randomly divided into three groups of 15 people. In this research, to measure depression, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility, Beck questionnaire, go-no-go and Stroop tests were used in the pre-test and post-test stages and 2-month follow-up. The first experimental group underwent CBT and 20 sessions of anodal stimulation of the l-DLPFC, and the second experimental group underwent CBT and 10 mg citalopram daily. The control group did not receive any intervention.
Results: The results of mixed ANOVA indicated the short-term and two-month effectiveness of both the interventions used on the improvement of depression symptoms of stroke patients (P<0.05), and no difference was observed between the effectiveness of the two combined interventions. In addition, only the combined intervention of CBT and tDCS had a short-term effect on improving inhibition and cognitive flexibility.
Conclusion: According to the results, it can be said that both combined interventions can be useful for improving depression symptoms in stroke sufferers.
