In this article, methods of intervention for increasing the social relationship of chronic psychiatric patients are discussed. The three interventionprocedures are: 1) development of new social relationships 2) maintaining and reinforcing the existing social relationships and 3) improving family relationships.

In addition, theproblems of implementing these procedures and the role of mental health professionals in the delivery of these services are exmined. Finally, with emphasis on Iranian socio-cultural characteristics, some recommendations are proposed
